Moshiko

Moshiko’s is one of the most well known shawarma places in all of Israel. In my humble estimation, it is also the most overrated. Located on the Ben Yehuda strip, this location always has a line. But, I think it is tantamount to an Olive Garden on 42nd Street. Location. Location. Location.

Apparently, the local health department even shut them down a few months ago. They since fixed their violations and are now open for business.

If Moshiko is your place, prepare for the wait. I promise you won’t see me in the line in front of you.

I know many people that do not wait more than five minutes when in the country to head towards shwarma. Some explore the country via shwarma joints, Zachary Epstein! In the 80’s, when there were two types of cheeses in this country, yellow and white, (thanks Basha) shwarma was a great middle eastern option since the food options were limited. So was kosher fast food a great option back then. McDavid’s (z’l) was a delicacy!

As the country has matured, so has its culinary options. But, as Archie Bunker longs for nostalgia, so do many Zionists that come to this country and long for the sliced meats rotating on a spit.

Choosing the best places to eat shwarma is much like choosing the best car to drive. Talk to the owners of a BMW, Audi and Mercedes Benz respectively and they will all swear by their brand. Further, they all have almost the same bells and whistles. It is not like the pickles at Moshiko’s is better than Doron. This is a great example of the place people like. In many cases – with cars and shwarma – the customer service is what nails it for us. For others, it is because it is “our” place.

Shwarma is delicious. Here are some of my favorite place with little explanation. After all, would we say we really like the tires on the BMW? It is all yum!
