A tried and true shawarma and grill dive near the shuk.

I was friendly with a fellow that upon landing in Israel went directly to Sima’s. When leaving Israel, he had two shawarmas wrapped tightly (no sauce) and brought them home to be eaten by whoever picked him up at JFK. Fair trade.

Unlike manny of the other shawarma places I highlight here, Sima’s has expanded its horizons to delicious grilled items and scrumptious salads. Rarely will you find Anglos here, underlining the value of a native eatery!

Sima’s is an old-school, tried and true shawarma joint and it is worth the hype. A gold standard of middle-eastern eats, this place will satisfy you. However, being at the foot of the shuk on Agrippas street, choosing Sima’s over the manifold other options shows some amazing commitment!

A word about shawarma.

I know many people that do not wait more than five minutes when in the country to head towards shwarma. Some explore the country via shwarma joints, Zachary Epstein! In the 80’s, when there were two types of cheeses in this country, yellow and white, (thanks Basha) shwarma was a great middle eastern option since the food options were limited. So was kosher fast food a great option back then. McDavid’s (z’l) was a delicacy!

As the country has matured, so has its culinary options. But, as Archie Bunker longs for nostalgia, so do many Zionists that come to this country and long for the sliced meats rotating on a spit.

Choosing the best places to eat shwarma is much like choosing the best car to drive. Talk to the owners of a BMW, Audi and Mercedes Benz respectively and they will all swear by their brand. Further, they all have almost the same bells and whistles. It is not like the pickles at Moshiko’s is better than Doron. This is a great example of the place people like. In many cases – with cars and shwarma – the customer service is what nails it for us. For others, it is because it is “our” place.

Shwarma is delicious. Here are some of my favorite place with little explanation. After all, would we say we really like the tires on the BMW? It is all yum!
