If Azura and Ima’s decided to become a franchise!

Pinati is as known for its food as the Moroccan, fez wearing Israeli, JJ. Walker look-alike “Big Boy” on the logo. Pinati is a franchise peppered throughout Israel that focuses on Sephardic dishes for the working league of the country. Walk in any of their locations and you will find cabbies and refrigerator repairmen slurping soup and dipping pita into hummus, and dreaming of yesteryear and the tastes of Savta.

The décor in most of these restaurants is sparse and you will inevitably be served by someone’s unemployed uncle who Savta uses around the restaurant to help wash dishes and keep him occupied. You are never going here for the ambience or service. It is to quench a thirst. So, on to the food.

Kubbeh soup is yummy and the meatballs with rice, and beans with rice are equally good. Hard to mess up hummus when you smother it in meat. Try it, you will not regret it.

Pinati is excellent….for a franchise. However, compared to Ima’s or Azura, a sloppy second. You can enjoy a meaty hummus or a savory Kubbeh soup and be quite satisfied, if the desire finds you and a location is near. Not top of the “must try list” but worthy of an afternoon lunch with your local cab driver.
