Shmaltz

A thick and tasty meat restaurant true to its name.

Shmaltz wins your attentions with just its name. Needless to say, this is not a restaurant that specializes in crudite and salads.

Located in the religious area of Ramat Eshkol, you will be hard pressed to see people not wearing dark pants and white shirts with tzitzit dangling out. When they are done eating at Shmaltz they usually loosened their belt too and even more hangs loose.

The staff shirts all say, ‘call your mother’ on the back. The creativity of this place scores high. I wish the tastes did as well.

Let’s get to the food!

The vildenasherai is a unique take on nachos but in place of tortillas are fresh fries. They were good. The chicken soup was the real deal, Jewish penicillin like Bubbie made. The corn (koren) dog appetizers were also very tasty and true to form.

The brisket sandwich, served on bulke challah rolls came out hot. The wine sauce was unique but this called for BBQ sauce or a Rosh Hashanah brisket recipe. More savory than sweet. I did not try the liver, but have heard from plenty it is top-shelf. The Shmaltz rice had a perfect hint of dill. Loved it.

Do not waste your time with desserts.

All in all, this place has good food and great service. The creativity scores VERY high, as does the ingenuity. The food will always be in the marketing’s shadows.

Shmaltz needs a few shmears to get to the top. It is almost there!
