Not a deli - but it is deli-sh!

Have you ever noticed?

  • Park Avenue Synagogue is NOT on Park Avenue?!

  • Fifth Avenue Synagogue is NOT on 5th Avenue?!

  • The New York Giants play home football games in New Jersey?!

  • We drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?!

And guess what else?

Cohen’s Deli in Jerusalem is not a deli?! At least not a delicatessen like 2nd Avenue or Ben’s or Fleischman’s. Even though their name is a misnomer – you do no want to miss this special treat in Jerusalem.

There are three locations of this fantastic eatery all within 1.5 miles of each other. I chose to dine at the one in Talbiye, on George Washington Street. It is a nook in the wall with no signage on the red and white awning, and from my perch where I had brunch, I could not tell that I was in Jerusalem at all. In fact, it could have easily passed for France, Tuscany or parts of Bavaria.

Well dressed people sipped coffee, some worked on their computers and others caught up with friends. A famous journalist sat outside and conducted an interview.

The menu is simple and spartan. A salad, some cheese boards, simple sandwiches on baguettes, fresh fruit juices and a load of home baked desserts that are all made on premises.

My wife chose the Frompi salad, which was diced finely and covered with soft sea salt, freshly cracked black pepper and lemon juice and some tahini drizzled on top. It was adorned with sliced almonds, and it was fantastic. I had the cheese baguette, and it was pure excellence. They picked the veggies from the market earlier in the day, and you could smell the freshness, and taste it too!

I tried a few desserts including the plum tart, the chocolate chip cookie and the nut cake. These were the bell of the ball. Not too sweet like so many desserts are these days and very fresh. The cookies were still warm. All were made this morning, and you could taste it. There was one waitress, and she was excellent. She gave every table the attention they needed and was helpful and kind.

Even though it is no deli – it is deli-sh! This place is a fantastic find. H/T to Evie. I am eager to go back again.
