This place puts the words delicious in sandwich!

When I say Bruno, you most likely think of the flamboyant Austrian character personified by Sascha Baron Cohen. Not anymore!

When I say Bruno now, the first thing to come to your mind will be this fantastic meat sandwich shop in the thick of the German Colony.

Located next to a grocery store (stay tuned - that is no accident) you will find this sandwich station that is higher scale, higher class and better taste than New Deli or anything of that caliber. This is a top-shelf sandwich-wery. Toasted baguettes with a thick crust and soft innards, the right assortment of toppings and meats that are extra-ordinary.

The pulled assado beef with chimichurri, roasted garlic and onion was a taste of ultimate satisfaction. The sliced hangar steak was soft and tender. The kick of the spicy onions gave it zing and zest. There was nothing left on my plate.

The raw truth is I wanted to add more of the awesome toppings like grilled eggplant and some pickled lemon with amba and a cabbage relish to my selection. The INCREDIBLY kind, thoughtful and knowledgeable staff person, Jimmy, told me he would make the sandwich however I liked but discouraged me from adding all of those flavors at once, as it will overpower the hoagie and the meat. He packed a to-go package of some of the sides I wanted to try so I could delicately add them to bites as I choose. I really admire a person who knows her/his trade and offers wise counsel with their food. Jimmy is such a person.

The choices here are a few different cuts of meat, including assado, brisket, hangar steak and kebab (hamburger ) meat, the requisite schnitzel options and even some vegan offerings. You can choose a plate if you are on Atkins, but I assure you that will sacrifice from the experience. This is a sandwich shop and they know it. They say it in their tag line. Stick with their hits.

Most interesting and unique about this place is Bruno is connected to the grocery next door where they host an upscale butchery. Unique and fancy meats are available, and some are even age dried. It might have been the first time I have witnessed age-dried Wagyu…..that is Kosher! I know what WE are having for Shabbat dinner this week! This is a smart and interesting angle to attract customers!

There is some space to dine in at Bruno and a little space on the sidewalk, but not a whole lot. This is not a place to choose for ambience - rather for amba and the meats that complement it well.

The prices are very reasonable and the service is excellent.

Bruno is a must stop shop for meat sandwiches in Israel. Ask for Jimmy! Enjoy!
