A raw fish restaurant that might be a raw deal.

In the touristy and wannabe-trendy area near Mamilla mall and next to the row of upscale hotels is JLM.

Run under the same auspices and in the same physical footprint as Zuta and 1868, this literal hole in the wall tries hard to be an upscale and chic sushi establishment. I am not sure it hit any of the marks it intended.

We can begin with what was right. The food was presented beautifully. The decor was Japanese minimalist and clean. The service was great! Sadly, that is about where it ends for me.

The cocktails were tasty but weak on alcohol content. Not even enough for a mild buzz for the lightweights amongst us. The menu had some sushi options but they were all intricate rolls. No simple solutions of spicy tuna or cucumber avocado rolls for the less adventurous. The “fancified” rolls presented magnificently and each had different ingredients but all tasted very similar.

We had an array of the appetizers. The sticky buns were decidedly delicious but only came two per order and were impossible to cut and share. The duck was far better than the beef. The egg rolls were extra oily and lacked flavor and the dumplings had a consistency and taste that resembled chopped liver. (I happen to like chopped liver but these did not ring my bell).

While the concept ‘less is more’ seems to be in-vogue at this eatery, it did not apply to the bill. For a meal that did not leave us unbuttoning our pants, it did lighten our wallets.

As a HUGE fan of Zuta and 1868, this sad little-brother of a sushi restaurant was a “raw” deal.
