Harvey’s Smoke House

A smokin’ experience at this non-traditional restaurant in Israel!

Harvey’s Smoke House is an anomaly in Israel. You will not find hummus on the menu. The closest you will get to an appetizing salad, is the Alabama coleslaw. Pita is not in eye shot. But, what you will find is a Texas styled, kosher, good old fashioned smoke house and BBQ – the likes of the Kosher cuisine minded have yet to taste.

An extensive lists of cocktails and drinks are available, though the beer list could have been a touch more robust. After all, nothing is better than a beer and brisket.

The perfect starter is the burnt ends of the brisket. Though, little is burnt, it is savory and bite sized for people having a hard time making a decision. Also, they do not cheapen the brisket with sauces. It is served in its natural juices making the small nuggets even more delicious. The poppers are scrumptious. Just enough kick to wake you up but not to burn the taste buds off of your tongue.

The brisket is slow cooked over 12 hours time and needn’t be chewed. It melts in your mouth. The 18 hour, cherrywood smoked Asado Ribs and 14 hour braised short ribs are more salivating to adults than the puppies that would soon chew the finished bones.

The service is on point for Israel. Found on the touristy strip of Shimon Ben Shetach Street, with other over-priced restaurants geared for the kosher traveler to delight in the rarely found delicacies, it works fine. Nothing amazing but, good enough.

Believe it or not, pricing was not exorbitant. Like other steak places in Israel, the prices of most beef options are per 100 grams. But, when all was said and done, it did not break the bank – though it almost broke my belly.

Don’t walk….run to Harvey’s!
