Also located at the foot of the Iraqi shuk in Machane Yehuda Market, a stones throw from Crave, you will find Khachipurya, a taste of Georgia – the country that was part of the former Soviet Union, not the state where you get corn bread and sweet-tea!

Like many of its neighboring eateries, this is a focused establishment with one type of main dish, a doughy pastry with potent and sharp cheese, native to the country.

Kchahipurya concentrates on what they do, this doughy – cheesy dish. You can add a few items to it, like eggs or onions, and you can change its shape, but if you come here, you know what you want and there are not many variations. I appreciate they do not mess with success.

Each kachipurya is made form scratch. You will not have some sitting under heat lamps. In fact, two menu items, the penovani and the imeruli each take 20 minutes to make, but are WELL worth the wait. It even states so on the menu.

The staff are all transplants from the FSU. Slavik faces and tough personalities, they know their trade and will be the first to let you know they are doing YOU a favor by feeding you THEIR food.

Similar to pepitos, it is perfect for a lunch, a snack or a simple dinner without fanfare or extras. If you are one of the few Ashkenazi Jews left that can still digest dairy, you need to retry it once. I doubt you will be back weekly, but perhaps quarterly. It is worth expanding your tasting repertoire and experience.

Enjoy!
