A great Latin nook worthy of a stop for some salsa, spirit and a yummy snack!

Like the country itself, the Machane Yehuda Market has been born again, hard! What was a 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM fruit, vegetables and meat and fish market has now morphed into that, plus a tasting bazaar of foods and eateries that literally could take up 40 pages.

With few exceptions, I am only focusing on restaurants for The 2 Plate Solution. Still, one MUST spend time at the shuk, as it is called. I recommend NOT going on Fridays or late Thursday, at least for real shopping as it is wall to wall people and the claustrophobic amongst you might resent the decision.

When it comes to restaurants, the periphery of the shuk has spouted amazing restaurants, some new and some staples, including Sima, Jackos, Hatzot, HaMotzi and more. Inside the walls of the shuk what were shuttered aluminum doors have now rolled open to be restaurants, bars, eateries and niche hangouts for tomorrow’s leaders.

If you want to feel young, visit the shuk any night. If you ARE young, visit the shuk any night.

One such eatery is called Pepitos, a Mexican inspired hole in the wall with a simple and focused menu.

They offer two rows of food, arepas or burrito’s (though it is called by a different name, sandwiches I think). The arepa’s are a thick corn based pita-like foundation. The burrito or bread sandwich is traditional.Several options, (including veggie and vegan) are on the menu.

The food here is scrumptious. It is not a large meal and what you see is what you get. If 12 people ordered at the same time, the nook would be full. But, if you want a simple lunch or a bite for dinner, this is your place. The LaBomba was the bomb! I chose the assado, but the pastrami and salami options looked equally amazing.

The staff is young, helpful and fun. They love that there are doing and want to make sure you love eating there. It only adds to the experience. Do not waste your time with French-fries, though the salad was tasty too.

Pepitos was mui yummy! Aye Carumba!
